When we think about members of society that are left out or marginalized, we tend to think about other human beings. Yet, in a country where injured and abused dogs and cats are a common sight, it’s our responsibility to recognize that animals are a part of our society, and we need to protect them from harm.

Therefore, Do Something Good would like to give a shout out to a few animal welfare organisations that are doing an excellent job in protecting and rescuing our fellow unfortunate feline and canine friends.

Paws Mission (Second Chance)

Paws Mission, also known as Second Chance as of January 2013, is an animal shelter that is currently taking care of roughly 300 canines and felines. With a limited staff, it is difficult for Second Chance to attend to each and every one of the animals as well as they would like to. Therefore, there are plenty of volunteering opportunities for all you animal lovers out there!

Volunteering opportunities:

1)   Bathe the dogs. Groomers are more than welcome to give these well-deserving dogs a makeover.

2)   Clean the surroundings. It is important to maintain the hygiene of the surroundings in order to prevent animals from contacting skin diseases.

3)   Walk the dogs. Due to the large number of animals in the shelter, it is a L-U-X-U-R-Y for dogs to have walks!

If you are interested in giving them a helping hand, please visit their website, www.pawsmission.com or Facebook page www.facebook.com/PawsMission

Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB)

MDDB is not to be mistaken as an animal shelter. It is, rather, an animal rescue organisation. They rescue on average a total of 30 puppies, kittens, pregnant and injured animals on a monthly basis. MDDB believes in the act of Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR), a humane method that aims to reduce the number of feral animals in the society by neutering and releasing it to a safe environment.

Once they are nursed back to health, an adoption drive will be held. There are plenty of hands-on volunteering opportunities during MDDB’s adoption drive.

Volunteering opportunities:

1)   Help to handle the puppies and dogs (ensure that they do not run out of the play pen)

2)   Maintaining the cleanliness of the play pen

3)   Fostering (Usually for a duration of 1-2 weeks)

TIP: Fostering is a fun and excellent form of volunteering for MDDB as it provides MDDB with more room for more rescues!

If you are interested in giving them a helping hand, you can drop by their adoption drive and inform the helpers that you would like to assist them.

Katzen Cat Sanctuary

Katzen Cat Sanctuary is a young animal welfare organisation dedicated to saving felines. As of now, Katzen has a total of 80 cats under their wings, which include badly injured cats that are under intensive treatment. Being a young organisation and having so many treatments to cover, Katzen requires a huge amount of public support.

Right now, Katzen is in a middle of a move from Sungai Buloh to Shah Alam. However, once everything is set in place, volunteers are greatly encouraged to give a helping hand.

Volunteering opportunities:

1)   Help to handle kittens and adult cats during adoption drives

Requirement: Volunteer has to have the experience with handling cats

2)   Cleaning the cages and the compound

Requirement: Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own cleaning materials eg. Gloves

Also, if you want to help a cat out but it is inconvenient for you to bring one back, you can always choose to SPONSOR a cat! By sponsoring a cat, you will not only save a life but you will also help to reduce the financial burden of Katzen. That is equivalent to helping two parties with one deed! If you fellow volunteers or animal lovers are interested in showing them your support, please visit their Facebook page www.facebook.com/KatzenCatSanctuary for more information and notifications of their upcoming events. Alternatively, you can contact them at +6012-203 2145 or drop them an email at [email protected]
