We believe that every child should have the opportunity to develop to his or her full potential.

Children with Special Needs require more support to empower them to lead a full life in the community.

BOLD Association for Children with Special Needs, Penang is a non-profit community based organization dedicated to serving Children with Special Needs and their families.

BOLD started in 1998 as part of the Penang Educational Consultative Council, a Penang State Government initiative to improve educational services and facilities in the state. In 2008, we became a registered society so that our work for Children with Special Needs would continue to grow with a long term vision in mind. BOLD is a partner of Asia Community Service (ACS), working together to provide better services and more support to families of children with Special Needs.

Currently, BOLD has 2 activity centers – one on Penang Island which is sponsored by annual funding from the Penang Skills Development Centre (PSDC) and the other on Mainland Penang, launched in 2006 with the pledge of 5 years of support from Pertubuhan Bunga Tanjung. BOLD runs Intervention Programs for children of different ages, with different kinds of needs. Our Resource Centre has a collection of over 500 books and videos on various kinds of Special Needs and intervention methods.

BOLD has organised Holiday Literacy Camps every year, since 2008, to help children with reading difficulties. This year’s Holiday Literacy Camp will run from 25 November to 6 December. BOLD needs volunteers who will be prepared to teach for two weeks, Monday to Friday. During these two weeks, classes for children learning to read in Mandarin will be in the mornings (9am to 12pm) while classes in Malay will be in the afternoons (2pm to 4.30 pm)

To prepare you for the camp, our specialist consultant will offer training in:

  • Multi-sensory methods to teach children with reading difficulties
  • Kinaesthetic exercises to stimulate learning processes.

Training will be held at BOLD’s Activity Centre in Minden Heights on 16 September and 28 October for teachers of Mandarin and Malay respectively.
