Upcyled couch

Notice anything different at this year’s Urbanscapes, the go-to indie music festival of the year? How about a couch made entirely out of used plastic bottles? In an effort to promote recycling and upcycling, Do Something Good started a project that began in the confines of Makespace where 5 volunteers from Do Something Good set out to build a couch made out of plastic bottles to showcase the use of upcycling to the general public and at the same time engaging them.

To build the couch, the volunteers collected used plastic bottles over the week and ended up with more than enough to make a workable couch that would be used to expose people at Urbanscapes to the culture of upcycling. Working around the clock and overnight, by the time morning came rolling by, the couch was already up on the hills of MAEPS for the whole two days. Hundreds of passersby during Urbanscapes stopped to take photos with the couch and to sit on it as well after a full day of rocking on to the featured acts.

While Do Something Good worked the upcycling front, Biji Biji and iM4U joined in on the fun as well with Biji Biji setting up three recycling stations and iM4U providing free mineral water to people who recycled at these strategically placed recycling stations.

At the end of the day, Do Something Good and iM4U were able to recruit volunteers for future projects with Do Something Good achieving a point of 100 volunteers. Every volunteer was then given a free sticker after registration.

It was a successful two days for Do Something Good as the 5 volunteers who helped make the day possible were then able to unwind and relax to the tunes of Franz Ferdinand while chilling out on the upcycled couch. Now that’s what you call ingenuity.
